In recent years, there has been a strong focus on increasing the amount of renewable power generation on the U.S. grid in order to reduce greenhouse gas generation.  The inclusion of more weather dependent renewable generation increases the requirements for responsiveness of non-renewable facilities on the grid.  New rules and regulations are being drafted and issued encouraging the inclusion of flexible technologies to assure grid robustness with increased renewable generation.  In some cases, these rules encourage the implementation of high flexibility, lower efficiency, and higher emitting technologies.  Technology has advanced.  Today, high efficiency, flexible technologies are available that can meet responsiveness demands.  This presentation includes information on currently available technologies, some of the rules and regulations proposed to support renewable integration, and potential unintended consequences of this clash of regulation and technology.
