Many in the Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) community may already be aware that after almost three years, the revised 45Q Tax Credit has been finalized by the Internal Revenue Service and was extended for an additional two years through the FY 2021 Omnibus Appropriations Bill (Omnibus). What may be less well known is that the almost 5,600 page Omnibus contained many other provisions relating to CCUS.

There is a growing overproduction of electricity from solar and wind, but solar in particular, especially in the Southwest. Utilities are in a rush to find ways of saving this electricity and balancing their systems.

Batteries and other storage systems are all on the table, along with what may have the most promise: green hydrogen. This is hydrogen made by electrolysis, using surplus electricity. T

he Europeans are ahead of us, but more and more U.S. utilities are looking at hydrogen as the companion to alternative fuels.

Water use intensity is projected to increase for many of the leading decarbonization pathways for fossil power generation. These include fuel switching (e.g. biomass, hydrogen) and carbon capture and storage (CCS). In many parts of the US, water scarcity is already a key consideration both for management of current systems as well as for planning of future investments. This motivates additional effort at reducing power plant water intensity through operation improvements, technology selection, and sourcing of non-traditional waters.
