In this first webinar of the Energy Management webinars hosted by USAID's Bureau for Development, Democracy, and Innovation (DDI) had guest speakers Scott Coe and Rich Barone from the Peak Load Management Alliance (PLMA). Scott and Rich covered trends and best practices on energy management and provided an overview of the different levels of energy management systems. They also walked through the Smart Grid Architecture Model (SGAM) to demonstrate smart grid use cases for current and future implementations on the grid.

 In his current role, Rich drives the practice's strategic, client-based growth, evaluating new service lines, diversification of technology segments, regional focus and new client types. His strategic focus is paired with revenue tracking and forecasting responsibilities to translate these strategies into charitable and trackable EBITDA growth. Prior to this role, he provided leadership and direction in DER strategy, business cases, technologies, program portfolio and market development. Prior to TRC, Rich helped advance Hawaii's clean energy goals by serving as Director of Customer Energy Resources Operations at Hawaiian Electric, where he worked cross-functionally within the three Hawaiian Electric operating companies to optimize the procurement and operationalization of Distributed Energy Resources, including battery storage, to foster system reliability in a rapidly-changing electricity grid.

 

Rich joined Hawaiian Electric in 2015 with over 15 years of strategic planning, early-stage technology assessment, software development and system integration expertise. His prior experience was as Associate Director in Emerging Technologies at Navigant Consulting. In that role, his primary focus was Smart Grid technologies and microgrid business models. Prior to his tenure with Navigant, Rich was employed by Pacific Controls, Inc. as VP, Smart Grid Services. He holds a M.S. in Energy Technology & Policy and an M.B.A. in Entrepreneurship from the University of Colorado. He earned an MS in E-commerce Application Development from Columbia University and he holds a dual B.A. in English and Philosophy from Boston College

Scott works with grid operators to help them make markets more efficient and the grid more stable, improving the ability of the grid function with more renewable resources and adapt to new control technologies. He has direct experience with all wholesale electricity market operators in North America as well as several established and emerging markets across the globe.  Scott focuses on integration solutions for distributed resources and has a personal interest in pushing the envelope for implementing pricing constructs that bridge wholesale and retail grid.  Scott holds a BA in Engineering Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a PhD in Physical from Yale University.

Alexia Kelly has worked for more than 15 years at the intersection of public and private markets to accelerate the transition to the zero carbon economy. She currently serves as Director of Net Zero+ Nature at Netflix, where she's responsible for the company's Science Based Target implementation, carbon credit portfolio and renewable energy purchasing strategy. She also serves as a Senior Advisor to the High Tide Foundation on the Integrity Council for Voluntary Carbon Markets. Prior to joining Netflix, Alexia has held senior roles at the U.S. Department of State's Office of Global Change, The Packard Foundation, ENGIE Impact, the World Resources Institute, and The Climate Trust. 

She serves on multiple volunteer boards, including the Energy Trust of Oregon, the Low Emission Development Strategies Global Partnership, the Hood River Energy Council and the Energy Access Power Partnership. In her spare time she geeks out on natural building, is perfecting her kimchi recipe, and explores the beautiful Columbia River Gorge, where she resides with her husband and two children, Rowan (7) and Ila (5).
