Washington, D.C. – The United States Energy Association (USEA) applauds the U.S. Government’s decision to approve a $130 million project aimed at constructing a high-voltage transmission line expanding the connection between the Moldova and Romania energy systems to ensure a reliable supply of electricity to Moldova from European markets. This pivotal investment is expected to enhance Moldova's energy security and improve its integration into the European electricity grid.
This decision follows the successful completion of a technical and economic analysis of three potential interconnection options conducted by USEA, which identified the Strășeni–Gutinaș 400 kV transmission line as the most viable option. USEA’s comprehensive study provided the technical and economic data that served as the foundation for the U.S. Government’s approval of the $130 million project, marking a critical step forward in securing a reliable energy supply for Moldova.
"The U.S. Government's approval of this critical investment represents a strong commitment to Moldova's energy future and its continued integration with the European energy markets," said Mark W. Menezes, President and CEO of USEA. "We are excited to see the significant progress being made toward a more resilient energy system for Moldova, and we are proud that our analysis helped identify this important transmission line, which will create opportunities for U.S. firms by enabling Moldova to adopt and utilize U.S. technologies."
The new transmission line will enable Moldova to import electricity from European markets, reducing its reliance on electricity supplied by Russia-owned power plants and improving grid stability. By connecting Moldova to the broader European power network, the project also lays the groundwork for more extensive regional cooperation in energy trade, contributing to long-term grid stability and energy sustainability across the region.
“This approval marks a significant milestone for Moldova's energy future. The successful collaboration between Moldelectrica and the United States Energy Association over the past 7 years has been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition. Our joint efforts, guided by USEA’s expertise and insights, have laid the foundation for a more reliable and integrated energy grid,” said Sergiu Carmanschi, Interim General Director of Moldelectrica, Moldova’s transmission system operator.
USEA remains dedicated to supporting energy development projects that enhance energy security and will continue to work with stakeholders to help Moldova achieve its energy goals.
