Washington, DC—United States Energy Association (USEA) President and CEO Mark Menezes issued the following statement in response to the provisional agreement reached by the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament to implement a stepwise phase-out of Russian natural gas imports:
“This provisional agreement to fully ban imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) and pipeline gas by late 2027 is a monumental step towards true European energy sovereignty,” Menezes said. “This comprehensive and decisive action demonstrates the continent's unwavering commitment to securing its own future and hardening its energy markets against weaponization.”
Menezes also encouraged the European stakeholders to utilize American LNG during this transition.
“We urge EU member states to fully integrate long-term contracts for American LNG into their national diversification plans. Securing supply through reliable, democratic allies like the United States is the fastest, most effective, and most environmentally responsible path to meeting Europe’s energy needs while bolstering collective security and driving global market stability,” Menezes added.
“This long-term energy partnership is foundational to transatlantic economic and security interests. USEA remains committed to working with EU policymakers and industry leaders who are interested in collaborating with American LNG producers.”
