Jiemin Lu received his Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh in 2008 and his M.S. degree from Peking University in 2003. He is currently a research associate at the Bureau of Economic Geology, the University of Texas at Austin. His general research interests include petrography and geochemistry. His research areas include CO2-rock-water  interactions, CO2 fluid flow, reservoir and seal evaluation, and risk assessment for CCS.

The Gulf Coast Carbon Center (GCCC) at the Bureau of Economic Geology, The University of Texas at Austin has been a leader in CCUS research for over a decade.  The GCCC gained extensive experiences in site characterization, project design and execution, and monitoring from several CO2 injection and EOR projects in the Gulf Coast Region. The GCCC has also been studying the prospects of CO2 sequestration and EOR in Texas offshore and recently completed a characterization project for site characterization in Gul of Mexico.

The event featured influential thought-leaders in the energy sector, including the White House Council on Environmental Quality, Department of Energy, the U.S. Army and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

Abstract

Biomass could have an important role in the strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from large coal plants. Amongst the plethora of different biomasses, wood pellets have emerged as one of the most successful and fast growing internationally-traded commodities. Wood (and straw) pellets offer a more energy dense and transportable alternative to the traditional wood chip, a product most commonly associated with the paper and pulp industry.
