On Thursday, Brock Bierman, the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Assistant Administrator for the Bureau of Europe and Eurasia, urged the U.S. and its allies to collectively protect countries in Southeast Europe from renewed threats to their sovereignty by the Kremlin.

Derek Burke serves as Senior Program Coordinator for the U.S. Energy Association working on the U.S.-East Africa Geothermal Partnership (EAGP).  EAGP is a public-private partnership between the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the implementing partner, USEA.  The partnership seeks to promote the development of geothermal energy resources and projects in East Africa, while facilitating the involvement of the U.S. geothermal industry in the region.  In his role Derek collaborates with USAID, members of the international donor community, and public and private sector stakeholders to advance energy sector development and further sustainable economic growth.

Derek holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Studies from Kansas State University and a Master’s of Science in Foreign Service degree from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service.  Prior to joining USEA, Derek served in the Peace Corps in Ghana and worked on two USG funded projects in Liberia.

This would include removal and byproduct utilization strategies, for current and future coal-fired utility and industrial applications.

Michelle Gaston Littlefield was a Program Coordinator at the United States Energy Association (USEA), with their Program in Promoting Domestic and International Consensus on Fossil Energy Technologies. Her main focus was promoting clean technologies for fossil fuels by reducing carbon emissions.

Michelle has a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Studies from the University of North Carolina in Wilmington and has training in GIS and environmental sustainability. Prior to joining USEA, she worked as an environmental consultant in policy and procedures, as well as in environmental education.

The Integrated Resource Plan released in August 2018 calls for a significant increase in renewable energy. To support the increase in intermittent resources, South Africa’s state-owned utility Eskom has unveiled its Distributed Battery Storage Program and environmental and social management framework study (ESMF), committing to solar-plus-storage and energy storage projects totaling 1,400MWh. The plan calls for storage in all nine provinces and has two phases of development and construction.
