Robert B. Catell is an accomplished global energy industry leader and is the recipient of the 2009 United States Energy Award. Bob Catell exemplifies the type of individual so heavily deserving of the recognition for which this award was designed.

Bob Catell began his career at Brooklyn Union Gas, a small regional gas distribution utility that he built into one of the largest electric power/natural gas companies in the United States.  He also orchestrated the merger of KeySpan Energy with National Grid, a strategic more to foster the growth of a world-scale energy company.

Bob Catell is a past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the United States Energy Association, having previously served as Vice Chairman and as a Director, and as both a Chairman and member of various USEA committees. He served as a Vice Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 17th Congress of the World Energy Council, held in Houston in 1998.

He also has served the energy industry in several prominent leadership roles, including as Chairman of the American Gas Association; Vice Chairman of the National Petroleum Council’s Natural Gas Committee; and as Director of the Edison Electric Institute, the Energy Association of New York and the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority. He is also Chairman of the New York State Foundation for Science, Technology and Innovation and Co-Chair of the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center.

Bob Catell is a timeless supporter of the New York, Brooklyn and New York State communities, in addition to his global energy leadership. The United States Energy Association is honored to announce Robert B. Catell as the recipient of the 2009 United States Energy Award.

Peter J. Robertson is the 2010 recipient of the United States Energy Award, and he is Senior Advisor, Oil & Gas, for Deloitte LLP.  Robertson previously served as USEA Chairman, Vice Chairman and as a member of the USEA Board of Directors.  Robertson retired on April 30, 2009 from Chevron Corporation in the position of Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors.  He began his career with Chevron in 1973 and served in a number of leadership positions including:

  • Vice President, Finance, Chevron USA
  • President, Warren Petroleum
  • Vice President, Strategic Planning
  • President, Chevron USA
  • President, Chevron Overseas Petroleum, Inc.

 

His involvement with USEA came at a time when the Association’s visibility and reputation were growing significantly, in a large part due to the participation and involvement of Chevron as a corporate member and Peter Robertson personally.  USEA gained prominence in the oil and natural gas sectors due to the visibility of an industry leader such as Peter Robertson.

In April of 2010, Robertson became an independent senior advisor to the Deloitte Center for Energy Solutions.  He also is a director of Jacobs Engineering, Universal Pegasus International, Resources for the Future; serves as Co-Chairman of the U.S.-Saudi Arabian Business Council, Chairman of the World Affairs Council of Northern California and is Vice-Chairman of the International House at the University of California, Berkley.

Peter J. Robertson personifies the international energy leader that the United States Energy Award is intended to recognize.  The United States Energy Association is pleased to honor Peter J. Robertson as the 2010 recipient of the United States Energy Award, presented June 7, 2010 in Washington, D.C.

Michael G. Morris, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of American Electric Power Company is the 2011 recipient of the United States Energy Award, an honor given annually to an outstanding energy leader in recognition of their leadership initiatives and contributions to the global understanding of energy issues. 

Morris has led AEP since January 1, 2004 and has guided the company’s efforts to advance an interstate high-voltage transmission system in the United States; develop innovative carbon capture and storage systems for coal-fueled power plants; and put in place energy efficiency initiatives and intelligent distribution grid technologies. 

Prior to joining AEP, he was chairman, president and CEO of Northeast Utilities System and was heavily involved in the formation of ISO-New England, as well as restructuring and retail customer choice in the New England states.  Morris also was CEO and President of Consumers Energy and president of CMS Marketing, Services and Trading. Additionally, he was president of Colorado Interstate Gas Co. and executive vice president of marketing, transportation and gas supply for ANR Pipeline Co., both subsidiaries of El Paso Energy. Morris was the founder and president of ANR Gathering Co., one of the first gas marketing companies in the United States. 

Morris is past chairman of the Edison Electric Institute and the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations. He also serves on the U.S. Department of Energy’s Electricity Advisory Board, the National Governors Association’s Task Force on Electricity Infrastructure, and the Business Roundtable (chairing the Business Roundtable's Sustainable Growth Initiative). He serves as a director of the boards of Alcoa, Battelle, and The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc, and was recently appointed to the Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents and the MSU College of Law Board of Trustees.

Morris joins a prestigious list of individuals who have committed their time to building the respect of the industry through corporate and public leadership. He has greatly supported the work of the United States Energy Association and the World Energy Council and is recognized internationally as a prominent global energy leader.

Mike Sommers is the 15th chief executive of the American Petroleum Institute (API), the largest trade association representing all aspects of America's natural gas and oil industry.

Since his appointment in July 2018, Sommers has overseen the strategic realignment of API’s priorities and advocacy efforts, introducing an integrated organizational structure and core API Principles. Among other initiatives, he led the organization through an unprecedented period in global energy markets, effectively positioned the industry through political transitions in Washington and in state capitols across the country, increased utilization and visibility of API standards and safety programs, and led the adoption of the industry’s solutions-oriented efforts to address the risks of climate change.

Sommers is a regular contributor and thought leader on major cable news networks. In 2021, Fortune Magazine listed Sommers among its 50 World’s Greatest Leaders.

Previously, Sommers headed the American Investment Council, representing the nation's leading private equity and growth capital firms and other business partners.

Throughout his career, Sommers has held critical leadership roles in the U.S. House of Representatives and at the White House, including as Chief of Staff for Speaker of the House John A. Boehner and Special Assistant to President George W. Bush at the National Economic Council.

Sommers is a native of Naperville, Ill., and a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He is married to Jill Sommers, a former Commissioner at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). They have three children in college and live in Alexandria, Virginia.

Charlie Riedl is the Executive Director for the Center for Liquefied Natural Gas  (CLNG), focused on effectively advocating on behalf of the LNG industry. Mr Willem JC Theron is employed by Eskom, South Africa, as a General Manager in the Southern African Energy Unit.  Mr Theron played a pro-active role in the development of energy trading in the Southern African Power Pool and the implementation of Eskom’s strategic direction in Southern Africa and beyond. 

Mr Theron has been with Eskom for 35 years and holds various tertiary qualifications in engineering and commerce.

Carol Mulholland is a principal in the Energy Services Group. She directs the Market Intelligence Practice, which focuses on applying social marketing tools to energy-efficiency programs. Ms. Mulholland has more than 25 years' experience working with the managers of electric utilities to design corporation-wide programs, policies, and training programs and to evaluate energy-efficiency programs.

 

Ms. Mulholland is an expert in evaluating and designing information and education programs. She is the lead trainer for the Association of Energy Services Professionals’ (AESP's) Introduction to Marketing course and teaches several other AESP Institute training courses. Her extensive international experience includes helping Eskom, South Africa's largest electric utility, to design and implement a program that introduced energy-efficient lighting to South Africa and transformed the country’s lighting market in eight years.

 

Before joining Cadmus in 2008, Ms. Mulholland worked for 12 years on energy-efficiency programs and policies in such countries as India, Nepal, the Philippines, Bulgaria, Egypt, and Bangladesh. She also worked on program evaluations for gas and electric utilities throughout the U.S. and worldwide.

 

Ms. Mulholland holds a master's in international economics and international relations from the Paul H. Nitze School for Advanced International Studies at the Johns Hopkins University. She also has a bachelor's in English literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She was responsible for corporate strategic and policy aspects of trust fund operations with a total asset of about US$28 billion and annual disbursement US$4 billion. From May 2003 to February 2009, Ms. Wu was the sector manager of the Energy and Mining Sector Unit under the East Asia and Pacific  Region Sustainable Development Department of the World Bank. Her responsibilities included formulation/implementation of regional and country Bank assistance strategies for infrastructure sector development, business development, and preparation and supervision of all transport (since Jan 2007) and energy operations including lending, Global Environment Facility (GEF) and carbon financing as well as analytical work. Prior to joining the World Bank in 1996, Ms. Wu had worked for leading international consulting firms since 1990. From 1984 to1988, Ms. Wu managed the Renewable Energy Application Division of Zhejiang Energy Research Institute in China. Within the same period from 1986 to 1987, Ms. Wu was seconded to the EU for the China-EU cooperation project on decentralized energy systems.
 
Ms. Wu holds a bachelor’s degree from the Electrical Engineering Department of Zhejiang University in Hangzhou China and a master’s degree in Energy Economics and Policy from Paris University France.
