The USEA was rocked in August by the passing of executive director Barry Worthington. Upon hearing the sad news, PUF published a statement from USEA Chairman Sheila Hollis in the September issue, trying to articulate the Association's grief.

Known for her passion and zeal towards promoting Renewable Energy and Green Alternatives, Chief Mrs. Anita Nana Okuribido, affectionately referred to as  ‘Mama Renewable’, has contributed immensely to the positive growth and utilization of Renewable Energy in Nigeria.

A strategic planner, implementer, solutions provider, ideas developer and change agent, she is quite active at the bottom of the pyramid with extensive interests in Agricultural development, Renewable Energy Development and Sustainable Applications for Natural/Green Economic growth. A robust and dynamic speaker, she is highly sought after for her practical experience and extensive support/mentorship and consultancy for Clean Energy initiatives, start-ups and has spoken at multiple Renewable Energy fora; International, Regional and Local.

Chief (Mrs) Okuribido is the National President of the Council for Renewable Energy Nigeria (CREN), a non-profit oriented member based association that serves as the Umbrella body for all operators, stakeholders and interests in the Renewable Energy Industry in Nigeria. She is the National President of Women in Renewable Energy Association (WIRE-A). She is also a board member of the Solar Energy Program of the BANK OF Industry/United Nations Development Program since 2015 (SEP has commissioned over 40 off-grid Solar Power plants for Rural Communities without access to Power). She is the Vice President, South-West of Nigerian Women Group (NAWORG) of the National Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, NACCIMA; South-West Coordinator, Centre for International Private Enterprise, CIPE-ANWBN; Member, Solar Energy Society of Nigeria.

As an entrepreneur, she is the CEO of Siman Engineering Ltd, a Renewable Energy Company that focuses on Technology Development, that develops and implements Clean and Green Energy solutions focusing on Rural Empowerment, Establishment of Community Based Organizations (CBOs), SME’s Development, Corporate and CSR Initiatives.

While her avowed passion is to midwife the large scale development of Renewable Energy in Nigeria, developing women and youths while creating opportunities and growing entrepreneurs; she is quite particular on generation, deployment and utilization of bio-energy for Sustainable Energy and Enhanced Agricultural Development.

Chief (Mrs) Okuribido is the Founder of the Green Energy Institute, Nigeria, a new Initiative at and in collaboration with NACCIMA Women Business Group, Women in Renewable Energy Nigeria, Council for Renewable Energy Nigeria and endorsed by the Ministry of Power, Works, Housing and other MDAs. The Green Energy Institute has been conceptualized to act as a Developmental Institution to enhance and upgrade skills acquisition, technical knowhow and deployment of Green Energy Devices and Components.

The briefing was moderated by syndicated columnist and broadcaster Llewellyn King. Sheila Hollis, USEA Acting Executive Director, will give brief opening remarks.

This virtual event was open to members of the media, and other interested parties. Members of the media were given preference in the questioning.

Katheryn B. “Kathy” Curtis is senior vice president– Generation, Dominion Energy Virginia. 

Her team oversees the operation of Dominion Energy Virginia’s power generating fleet of gas, hydro, solar, biomass, coal and oil-fueled power stations in Virginia, North Carolina and West Virginia. 

Curtis joined the company in 1981 and has held numerous leadership positions in the corporate support departments of Human Resources, Supply Chain Management, Information Technology, and New Asset Acquisition & Integration. Her longest tenure has been in Power Generation, where she held leadership responsibilities for several power stations and served as vice president–Merchant Operations before assuming her current post in January 2014. 

She serves on the executive committee of the board of trustees of the Virginia Holocaust Museum in Richmond and on the executive committee of the board of directors of the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. She also is a board member of the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies and serves on its Power Generation Committee. 

Curtis earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from the University of Virginia and her executive MBA from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Ms. Ntombifuthi Ntuli is the CEO of the South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA). She was appointed to this leadership position in September 2019 and is tasked with steering the industry as it takes a central role in South Africa’s energy transition, by drawing on her deep knowledge and talents gained during 14 Years of experience in the energy and related sectors.

She has a strong background Renewable Energy policy and research environments having previously worked for the CSIR as a Research Group Leader: Energy Industry, where she focused on assessing the economic impacts of the energy sector transition including, jobs, SMME development, industrialisation as well as socio-economic development. 

Ntombifuthi holds an MPhil Degree in Energy Studies (University of Johannesburg) and a Certificate in Economic and Development Policy (University of Witwatersrand). She is an Alumna of the United States International Visitor Leadership Programme (IVLP) as well as the African Programme on Rethinking Development Economics (APORDE).  Previously she worked for the Department of Trade and Industry as a Director: Green Industries, where she was responsible for facilitating the development of the local renewable energy manufacturing industry. Before joining the DTI, she spent 3 years at the Embassy of Denmark working as a Coordinator for the Business to Business Programme, where she facilitated business linkages between Danish and South African companies. Prior to that she spent 7 years in Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality working on Energy and Climate Change programmes.

Angela Livino is the Director of Corporate Management Division at the Brazilian Energy Research Office (EPE in its Portuguese acronym). EPE aims at supporting the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy’s (MME) energy policies with studies and research on energy planning covering electricity, oil, natural gas and its derivatives and biofuels. EPE studies cover the areas of engineering, economics, modeling, policy and environment and where they overlap.
